Since the invasion of Ukraine, many companies have stopped doing business in Russia. Now also the fast food giant McDonald's. The company said it would finally leave Russia after more than 30 years and the sale of restaurants has already begun. This move came after the company initially temporarily closed its 850 stores in March.
The fast food giant cited the “humanitarian crisis” and “unpredictable operating environment” caused by the Ukraine war as the reason for its decision.
“It is impossible to ignore the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. And it is impossible to imagine that the Golden Arches represent the same hope and promise that led us to enter the Russian market 32 years ago.”
McDonald's boss Chris Kempczinski in a message to employees and suppliers
McDonald's said it will sell all of its locations to a local buyer and begin the process of "dearchizing" the restaurants, which includes removing the name, logo and menu. The trademarks in Russia will be retained.
The chain said its priorities include ensuring its 62,000 employees in Russia continue to be paid until the sale is completed and that they "have future employment with any potential buyer."
