WhatsApp also releases new features with its updates at high frequency. Not everything makes sense immediately, but sometimes there are really useful innovations. A small but nice function is currently being rolled out with which WhatsApp users can send a message to themselves, to their own telephone number, without any detours: “Message yourself”. Both Android and iOS users benefit from this.
“Message yourself”: The note app killer?
Everyone needs a regular opportunity to write something down somewhere. A standard application on every smartphone is therefore a more or less complex app for taking notes. Be it on-board tools like Samsung Notes, simple apps from the Playstores or powerful premium tools like Evernote. With “Message yourself”, WhatsApp now offers a very simple but extremely practical alternative that also works across multiple devices. This means that for many users the need for additional apps for their notes has decreased significantly.
The chat with yourself
To write a message to yourself, users follow the same procedure as when chatting with friends. Click on the round green message symbol at the bottom right and the “Select contact” window opens. The first existing contact on WhatsApp is the user himself, complete with profile picture and user name and the note “Send yourself a message”. From now on, this chat with yourself has all the functionality available like any other chat. Including end-to-end encryption.

Where can “Message yourself” be used?
There are many ways in which this new function can be put to good use. This screenshot has already been transferred from the smartphone to the desktop computer using “Message yourself” and the WhatsApp desktop app in order to be included in this article. Very practical in daily author work to transfer online findings to the PC via screenshot.
Any content format that is also sent to other users is suitable for a message to yourself. Photos, files, links, but also voice messages can be sent to your own WhatsApp profile. And stay there in the chat. Also interesting is the possibility of forwarding important comments from other chats that are worth keeping to your own account without having to take extra screenshots.
And so, thanks to this new feature, WhatsApp becomes a voice recorder, a repository for important documents, your favorite bookmarks or media that you want to access frequently. Using the three-dot menu, the contents of the chat with yourself are broken down into media, documents and links so that they are easily accessible. And quick shopping lists or conversation notes no longer require an additional app, but can simply be created using “Message yourself”. The content can then be accessed from all devices running WhatsApp.
“Message yourself” isn’t new, is it?!
Nope. So far, resourceful users have been able to achieve similar functionality with a few clever tricks. You could use Wa.me to send messages to your own phone number or create groups whose only member was the user. But the new “Message yourself” function is much more straightforward and requires no detours.
WhatsApp parent Meta had already announced the new feature as a beta version in December. The Jurznachrichtendienst is once again lagging behind its competitors. The WhatsApp alternative Signa is a step further here and, with the “Note to me” chat, offers an opportunity to store important notes for yourself directly in Messenger, such as a “To Do” or a shopping list. WhatsApp previously lacked a corresponding function. Now WhatsApp has followed suit.
