Emotions are played with here by writing in the message that users receive via Facebook Messenger that someone they knew had died.

“Look who died.”

"Look who died in an accident, I think you know him, I'm sorry..."

The message contains a link that contains “youtube” but does not actually lead to YouTube. You can access a fake Facebook login here:

You can tell from the URL that you are not on Facebook! Supposedly account information needs to be verified to view the video.

If you enter your login details here, they will be transmitted to the operators of the fake site.

Therefore, our tip if you are not sure whether it is a real Facebook login page: Just enter any imaginary data, such as a non-existent email address “hgheiwuoad8392jdskal@djskal.com” and a free one Invented password such as “hdshjkadhsjahajs”. If there is no error message here, the data will not be verified. Then it's just a matter of collecting login data.

The result: a dubious site

So if you “log in” with the fantasy data, you don’t get to a video, but to a dubious page that promises money:

This is just one of the many possibilities that could lie behind such a trap.

What can happen

The scammers have different approaches, which is why the following can happen:

  • You are taken to a replica Facebook page where you have to enter your login details to see the video. Of course no video appears, but the scammers now have the login details
  • You come to a page with a video, but you supposedly have to install a browser plugin to see it. However, this plugin intercepts the login data for Facebook and you can never see a video
  • You catch a Trojan.

Or – as in the current case – you end up on a dubious site that collects further user data or asks for investments.

What to do if you are affected?

  1. Change your Facebook account password immediately
  2. Check whether the correct email address is stored in the Facebook account.
  3. Inform your friends list about the mishap.
  4. Scan the computer for malware.
  5. If necessary, remove all harmful browser extensions in the browser and check whether there are any other extensions/add-ons in the browser that you have not installed or that you are not aware of.

This scam, which we also warned about last year ( HERE ), has been around for a long time. Other sites also warn against this. The messages vary, so another well-known trap with the text “Is that you in the video?” part of this phishing scam.
