Ever wanted to chat with Abraham Lincoln or share the waves with a surfer dude? This sounds like a science fiction movie, but thanks to the latest developments in the world of artificial intelligence, it could soon become a reality. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, recently announced its ambitious plans to integrate AI chatbots called “personas” into its applications. But what exactly does that mean and what impact might it have on the future of social media and how we interact with it? Let's take a look behind the scenes.
Meta and the ambitions of artificial intelligence
Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Meta, recently shared his vision of an AI-driven future for his company. He intends to integrate artificial intelligence into all of his products and his plans are already taking shape.
The so-called “personas” are basically AI chatbots that represent personalities. Imagine a surfer giving vacation tips and talking passionately about the perfect wave and life on the beach. Or perhaps you'd prefer to have an in-depth conversation with Abraham Lincoln that references America's rich history. It is unclear whether these chatbots can only imitate the accent and language of their personalities or can also reproduce the content of their dialogues.
Introduction of AI personas into social media
These “personas” could be integrated into Instagram, Facebook and even WhatsApp. According to the Financial Times , this integration is expected to increase usage of the apps and give new impetus to the currently stagnant Threads app.
Meta isn't the only company entering the world of AI chatbots. Snapchat has already launched an AI chatbot. This is an alien-like character that can be adapted to the user's wishes. For My AI, Snapchat uses OpenAI's GPT 3.5 model. But meta may have more to offer. It could rely on its own “Llama 2” language model, which would enable solid integration and place Meta even further at the center of current developments in artificial intelligence.
Advantage over TikTok and other competitors
The big advantage of these chatbots is their ability to give users a deeper and more personal interaction with the applications. They could also be a crucial factor that gives Meta an edge over its main competitor, TikTok. By the way, TikTok has not yet announced any concrete plans to integrate AI into its apps.
Beyond the text: AI for all areas
Text-based chatbots are just one aspect of Meta's AI ambitions. Zuckerberg also mentioned other opportunities for integrating AI into Meta's products. For example, image editing and generation functions could be introduced for Instagram.
Meta offers a range of artificial intelligence models that enable a wide range of applications. “AudioCraft,” for example, consists of three models that can create audio clips. These could be used under “Reels” and other videos. “CM3Leon” (pronounced “Chameleon”) can create images and even automatically generate captions.
Conclusion
The introduction of “personas” to Meta’s applications represents an exciting new step in the development of artificial intelligence. These chatbots could fundamentally change the way we use social media by allowing us to interact with historical figures like Abraham Lincoln or a casual surfer dude. It remains to be seen how these AI developments will impact the user experience. And how Meta's competitors will react to it. In any case, it is exciting to witness the rapid developments in the world of artificial intelligence.
