Meta promises its users a better understanding of how their data is handled. As the company announced on Thursday, the data policy has been reformulated for this purpose. “But this updated policy does not change how Meta collects, uses or shares data,” Meta said. However, among other things, the issues should be presented in a more understandable way, with more information and more examples.

The updated meta data policy applies to Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and other meta products. It does not apply to WhatsApp, Workplace, Free Basics, Messenger Kids or using Quest devices without a Facebook account. These products have their own privacy policies.

Meta inserts examples

With the update of the data policy, Meta would like to take a clearer position on how users' data is handled. For this purpose, Meta added, among other things, additional information and examples. In addition, it should now be possible to gain better control over which data Meta is allowed to use.

In addition, Meta now offers more options to access the control functions that allow users to adapt the use of their products according to their own needs. Privacy settings can still be managed as usual at any time. If Meta makes important changes to how data is collected, used or shared, users will be informed.

Terms of use also updated

The terms of use were also updated at the same time. This explains in more detail what requirements there are for Meta and those who use its platforms. These requirements include the rights and obligations under the Community Standards, for example, with respect to suspending or restricting accounts that violate the Terms of Use, Community Standards, intellectual property rights of others, or other laws.

In the notifications that users will receive starting today on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, users will find additional information about the data policy and the terms of use. There, users can also see a summary of the changes. The update takes effect on July 26th.
