The meaning behind Facebook's ultimatum - and why it's important to understand the fine print. You will receive an email from Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram. “We are expanding our terms of use! The updated terms of use come into force on October 20th.” That’s when your eyes start rolling, right? But wait, what's really behind it? Why should that even matter to you?
We are expanding our terms of use! The updated Terms of Use will take effect on October 20th.

Meta writes:
To adapt to the Digital Services Act, we are expanding our terms of use.
These changes will be effective as follows: - Effective immediately if you register to use our Services on or after August 25, 2023
- Effective October 20, 2023 if you register to use our Services before August 25, 2023 registered with our services.

a look behind the scenes
Meta claims to be more transparent, especially when it comes to the Digital Services Act (GdD). It may all sound positive and user-focused, but when you read the fine print, a different story emerges.
No compromise on terms: “ What if you don’t want to agree to our updated Terms of Service? “
Meta essentially offers an ultimatum: if you don't accept their updated terms, you won't be able to use their platform. A free choice? More of a “ take it or leave it” attitude.
Meta writes it like this:
“What if you don’t want to agree to our updated Terms of Service? We hope you agree to the updated Terms of Service and continue to use the Meta Products. However, if you do not want to agree to the updated Terms of Service, you can stop using our Services at any time. We would think it would be a shame if you left us. Please see the Facebook Help section for more information on how to delete your Facebook account to stop using our services and how to download your account information in advance .” ( Source )
NOTE: Before some people come around the corner again…
„Don't forget. The new Facebook rule begins, the biggest violation of the GDPR! where your photos can be used. Don't forget the deadline is today!!! „
Forget it! This is one of the countless chain letters that make absolutely no sense!
Conclusion: While Meta's efforts at transparency seem laudable, it is essential that users are aware of what they are actually accepting. It's not just an agreement to terms of use; it is consent to how they handle your data and what rights you have as a user.
