Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram mother Meta has apparently reached the next level in the development of its Twitter alternative. The app, which the group has been working hard on for several months, has the provisional name “Barcelona” and has now at least been given an icon. The app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi discovered this in the code of the as yet unpublished program and immediately posted it on Twitter. It is still unclear when the app will be officially available.

Eagerly awaited

“Instagram has continued work on 'Barcelona', their new text-based social network. Look at the app icon,” says a post by Alessandro Paluzzi. The expert has recently found out a few details about the eagerly awaited Twitter competitor and shared them with the community. For example, individual posts should contain a maximum of 500 characters and each thread should contain a maximum of 100 posts.

Compared to Twitter, handling Barcelona is said to be much easier and more reminiscent of a conventional chat feed. “In this way, Meta is trying to respond to a change in user behavior in which social interactions are increasingly shifting to private chats. The aim is to particularly score points with users who are turning away from Twitter and looking for new, similar playgrounds,” suspect industry experts from “SocialMediaToday”.

Dissatisfied community

It is no longer a secret that Meta is openly speculating that the Twitter community's dissatisfaction with Elon Musk's leadership style will become so great that it could lead to mass exodus. If more people are dissatisfied with Twitter but still want to send and receive short messages in real time, that opens up a promising opportunity for Mark Zuckerberg's company. “Together with Instagram, we are entering Twitter's turf and hoping to collect its large audience,” is the expert assessment.
