The claim
Apparently there is an image circulating called “Mexico did it” that shows the country curing COVID-19, but the image is a virus.
Our conclusion
It is a chain letter that has been circulating in small variations since 2020. However, such an image does not exist and has never appeared “in the wild”.
Important with chain letters: They must be timeless and simply not contain a specific time specification!
Something is happening “today” or “tomorrow” – or leave out such words altogether. In addition, some news channels always have to be mentioned in order to give the claim seriousness... even if there is absolutely nothing about it on their website. The “Mexico has done it” chain letter works according to exactly this pattern, and there is no evidence for its claim.
The “Mexico did it” claim
Here are some examples of the claim:

The text of the chain letter reads:
Attention this warning is currently making the rounds in America:
URGENT ALERT - WARNING
They will publish a picture showing how Covid 19 is cured in Mexico and it says "Mexico did it", do not open it because it will be in 5th seconds into the phone and cannot be stopped in any way.
IT'S A VIRUS. Share it with your friends and family. Now they said it on CNN and BBC too. DO NOT OPEN Please inform your friends.
A chain letter since 2020
The chain letter was already circulating in July 2020 in English with the title “ Argentina is doing it ” and in April 2021 for the first time in Spanish with the title “ México lo hizo ” and in English with the title “ Mexico did it ”, before now, in June 2022 as “Mexico has done it” circulated in German-speaking countries.
What all versions of the chain letter have in common is that it is always about an alleged picture with the name, which is supposed to show the cure for COVID-19 in the country, that it is a virus and that CNN and BBC have reported on it.
But there is nothing about it on any of the channels, neither 2020, nor 2021, nor 2022!
Can viruses hide in pictures?
In absolute theory: yes. The possibility was already discussed in many forums (for example HERE and HERE ) in 2014 and 2015. But such a virus would have to be very specific, for example overflowing the buffer of a specific display program in order to then implement code.
In practice, however, this is far too complicated: image display programs are usually protected against such buffer overflows and do not even open an image, anti-virus programs could recognize a code in an image, the file size of the images would be disproportionately large, etc.
The possibility has been considered since at least 2014... but no such image has ever appeared in the "wild", and no antivirus manufacturer has ever been able to discover one.
Conclusion
Such chain letters, which are only intended to unsettle users, have been circulating for tens of years. A famous example is the so-called Martinelli video ( we reported ), which also allegedly “hacked the phone,” but it was also just a panic-inducing chain letter.
