The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) recently warned of security gaps in the Edge internet browser. They said : “A remote, anonymous attacker” could exploit the vulnerabilities “to execute arbitrary program code and increase their privileges.” According to T-Online, both the browser version for Windows and the one for MacOS, which is based on the Chromium browser, are affected.
The BSI classifies the risk posed by the security gaps as “high”.
Remedy: Uninstall or update if available
Since Windows 10 was widely released, Microsoft has automatically installed the latest version of the Edge browser with regular updates on the computers of private users.
Some users are bothered by this feature but cannot find a way to uninstall Microsoft Edge. This is actually not that easy, because there is no field for it directly in the program. Instead, an uninstallation must be carried out via the file manager in Windows, the so-called Explorer. There you can find the subfolders using the following navigation: C: > Programs (x86) > Microsoft > Edge > Application. The browser can be uninstalled using the “PowerShell window” and the execution command .\setup.exe -uninstall -system-level -verbose-logging -force-uninstall You can find a detailed description of this process HERE.
If you don't want to deal with this uninstallation problem, you should be careful when using Edge and perhaps use another browser such as Google Chrome.
It is also advisable to check whether Microsoft has already released an update for the security vulnerability. Once this has happened, users should update the application. Normally, Edge updates automatically when the browser is restarted.
Edge is the successor to Internet Explorer. This was an integral part of the Microsoft operating system for around 25 years. The standard software could be replaced, but never completely uninstalled - a circumstance that regularly caused criticism.
