An online transfer here, an email there and then order something from your favorite delivery service. The Internet is an important part of our lives and we can no longer imagine life without it. But what should you do if the screen suddenly becomes blurry, the controls no longer work and an alleged error message from Microsoft appears telling you to call technical support?
Pop up from alleged Microsoft support
A 65-year-old German from the island of Rügen was faced with this question a few days ago. He dialed the phone number that appeared to be a Microsoft support employee. Under the pretext of needing the data for activation, he shared his debit card number, transaction number and date of birth. But the computer was not unlocked, but rather several unauthorized debits from the man's account. The fraudsters stole almost 2,000 euros.
But how can I protect myself?
Police advise – use a firewall, anti-virus software and update all software regularly. Choose strong passwords or choose them carefully. Do not open suspicious attachments or click on unusual links in messages. Microsoft will not email or call you to request personal or financial information or to provide support for problems with your computer.
