Twitter: Profiles all posted the same message - suspicion of manipulation in the US election has arisen

Suspicion of manipulation on Twitter in the US election

Twitter blocks more than 70 fan accounts of Democratic US presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg.
The accounts all posted the same message.

Twitter has blocked more than 70 fan accounts of Democratic US presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg since Friday. According to the company, these accounts, which all shared a similar tweet, may have been automated or run by just one person. In doing so, they would have “artificially influenced conversations,” which violates the platform’s guidelines.

“Strong broad impact”

“In the USA, Twitter is a very influential medium for political discourse. It has a much more widespread impact than, for example, in German-speaking countries. “There is therefore the potential, especially in the USA, to influence the discourse through a larger number of accounts and thus higher volume,”

explains social media expert Günter Exel in an interview with pressetext.

The fan accounts of the billionaire, who plans to run against Donald Trump in November, were caught posting the same message over and over again on his Twitter page. An oft-repeated statement was "A President is Born: Barbara Streisand sings Mike's praises."

Some of the accounts have been permanently banned, others can be unblocked if the operators can prove that they are really their personal profiles.

“In its terms of use, Twitter prohibits the operation of multiple accounts with overlapping purposes as well as the coordinated posting of identical or similar tweets,”

adds Excel.

A lot of money for the campaign

Bloomberg is relying heavily on social media content in his election campaign and isn't putting up with it. According to Benzinga, the billionaire's team recently hired around 500 employees to regularly post positive comments about the candidate on the social web.

In return, they receive a salary of $2,500 per month. On Instagram, Bloomberg also pays influencers a lot of money for memes that are supposed to get him more attention ( pressetext reported ).
