Then the chat partner urgently needs money. There are many reasons for this - sometimes they can't access their bank account and need help getting back to the US, or want someone to hold a valuable package for them or pay for travel expenses for a visit.

The demands for money not only come from the now familiar person themselves, but also from notaries, commanding officers or other third parties. That seems more authentic. No matter what story is told to the victim, what they all have in common is that they believe it and transfer large sums of money. Sometimes all of your savings. Victims sometimes borrow money or take out loans in order to make further transfers. Often in the hope that the charming soldier will come to Germany to visit one day and that the loneliness will end.

Polish man cheated out of several thousand euros by Instagram fraudster

This is what happened to a 37-year-old Polish man from the island of Rügen who was contacted via Instagram by a supposed US soldier. After some time she wanted to send him a package. The contents – a large sum of cash and a deed from a house in Hawaii. She asked him to keep the package for her.

The problem was that the package got stuck in customs and a fee of 15,000 euros was due. The 37-year-old man borrowed money and transferred almost 7,000 euros to a foreign account. The criminal police are now investigating fraud.
