According to research by Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR), investors have lost more than a billion euros in the past two years due to so-called cyber trading fraud. There are highly organized gangs behind the portals - in an ARD documentary, a former member provides exclusive insights.
Fraudulent cyber trading platforms
These are platforms with names like Tradeinvest90, Zoomtrader or Option888. They are primarily advertised on the Internet. Investors can register with the platforms in the belief that they are placing financial bets through the portals. In fact, the platforms act purely fraudulently and the money is not invested.
Call centers in Eastern Europe play an important role; investigators speak of the “engine room of fraud”. From there, the telephone agents pose as financial market experts. They promise investors good profits by betting on falling or rising stock market prices – so-called “cybertrading”. In addition, the call center agents gain the trust of the victims so that they deposit as much money as possible.
Research team provides exclusive insights
For the ARD television documentary “ I want more – Billionaire robbery on the internet ”, the SR research team managed to speak exclusively with a former employee of a criminal call center in Kosovo. He confirms that the money from unsuspecting investors on fraudulent cyber trading portals flowed directly into the pockets of the fraudsters and that they were able to afford a luxurious life.
Photos and videos of the perpetrators that were leaked to the SR show, among other things, sports cars, expensive watches and designer clothing.
On the other hand, some victims lose their entire existence. Some defrauded people have canceled life insurance policies or taken out loans. A victim who lost 300,000 euros in this way committed suicide.
As part of an international investigation, the Saarland State Criminal Police Office has put a stop to a gang of fraudsters and shut down five platforms. However, the scam continues unabated on other platforms.
