Fake news sites as part of the propaganda machine are increasing at a worrying rate. Just yesterday we reported on a “flood of professional propaganda with replica news sites” ( HERE ). This affects well-known news sites such as Bild, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, T-Online and now also Spiegel.

The content is consistently pro-Russian and anti-Ukrainian in nature. In addition, people's emotions and concerns are played with, so the topic of the energy crisis and inflation is regularly taken up in the articles and a link is made to the Ukraine crisis. – This is also the case in the alleged Spiegel article.

“While the Germans live in poverty, the ministers drink champagne”

The fake page for this headline is no longer online, but has been archived . The text states that Germany's national debt has reached a record level and that an additional fee for the use of gas will be charged from October.

“While the government spends its entire budget on Ukraine, it drinks champagne and enjoys life. The Ukrainians make fun of us. Stop supporting these freeloaders.”

Fake side of the mirror

Here the Ukrainian population and government are portrayed as scapegoats and described as parasites. Aside from this call's choice of words, which is untypical for a reputable news site, there are other indications that the site is a fake:

URL and website search

Yes, the website address has the word “spiegel” in it: “video.spiegelr.today”. But that's about all. However, the real domain is “ spiegel.de ”.

Fake news sites are often created very quickly, for example to direct users to dubious Bitcoin platforms.
In these cases, we often come across pages where links do not work because they are often only installed as graphics with no function. However, on the fake Spiegel page there are several links to the real website. This may seem unsettling at first glance.

However, if you are on the real site and use the search , you will not find the “Champagne” article. also don't get a suitable result using Google search and the search term “While the Germans live in poverty” as well as the additional search operator that pages of the Spiegel should be searched.

The Spiegel publishing group commented on the topic to the DPA

“Unfortunately, our brands are repeatedly misused for similar campaigns. We regularly examine legal and technical options and take action against this type of abuse in individual cases.”
