According to the game study, 18.2 million Germans already play games on smartphones
Smartphones are overtaking the classic home PC as the most popular gaming platform in Germany. This is the conclusion reached by a study published today, Tuesday, by game, the association of the German games industry .
According to this, 18.2 million people are already playing on their smartphones. That's around 900,000 or five percent more than a year ago. There are only 17.3 million players on the PC.
Variety of gaming platforms
“Games are becoming increasingly popular. Thanks to its widespread use and low barriers to entry, the smartphone also reaches many people who have previously played little or not at all. The growing variety of game platforms with an audience of millions is also important for indie developers: with small budgets and great creativity, they are inspiring more and more people with their brave and surprising game ideas,”
says game managing director Felix Falk.
Consoles such as Sony's Playstation 4, Nintendo's Switch and Microsoft's Xbox One are used by 16 million people in Germany - around 200,000 more than a year ago.
The number of tablet players has not changed: 11.5 million people play on it. A total of 34.3 million people are already playing in Germany. That's almost every second German. Of these, 47 percent are women and 53 percent are men. The average age of gamers in Germany rose to over 36 years in 2018.
App market with 497 million euros
The increasing number of users is pleasing not only the software manufacturers, but also the hardware manufacturers. The market for computer and video games as well as games hardware grew by 15 percent to over 3.3 billion euros in 2017.
The biggest growth driver is games for smartphones and tablets: in 2017, sales of game apps in Germany grew to 497 million euros. This is an increase of 21 percent compared to 2016 (409 million euros).
This means that sales of game apps grew significantly faster than the entire German games market in 2017 and have more than doubled since 2014 (241 million euros).
