Recently, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Consumer Center has been asked several times what mochi ice cream is about. Parents in particular were sometimes concerned because the media even warned against small children enjoying the ice cream specialty.

Where does mochi ice cream come from?

Mochi are originally small Japanese rice cakes. They have been made in Japan for hundreds of years. There is a suitable mochi for almost every occasion. What's new is filling the dough with ice cream. The food trend spilled over to us from Japan via the USA.

What does the ice cream trend consist of?

The casing is made of glutinous rice dough, which is usually made from glutinous rice flour, water and sugar. The dough is usually colored with food coloring.

“The casing is gluten-free and quite low in calories thanks to the ingredients mentioned, but the filling is usually even more substantial.”

Antje Degner from the MV consumer advice center.

The ice is in the cover. The original is vegan because the ice cream base is made from coconut milk. In practice, however, any ice cream, such as fruit, milk or cream ice cream, can be used as a filling. There is mochi ice cream with fruit purees, chocolate, coconut or nut butter. Matcha tea powder is also very popular.

Why can mochi ice cream be dangerous for small children?

The sticky rice dough has a soft, elastic, sometimes rubbery consistency. Small children may not be able to chew the dough sufficiently due to missing teeth. They then swallow it in larger pieces, which can be dangerous.

Conclusion

Mochi ice cream can be a cool treat on hot days. However, you should definitely make sure to chew the dough enough when enjoying it. If this is not possible, the mochi ice cream should be cut into small pieces before consumption.
