Relaxation after criticism of guidelines on sensitive content: According to YouTube, the new coronavirus is considered an everyday topic.

Content producers on the video platform YouTube are allowed to monetize content about the new coronavirus

The new coronavirus is now considered an everyday topic on YouTube.
However, the platform wants to crack down on false news about the virus.

The US video platform YouTube is again allowing content producers to monetize content about the new coronavirus. Just last week, the company began cutting off money from videos that contained more than a passing mention of the virus. But after massive criticism, YouTube has decided to stop this practice.

“Advertisers are putting pressure on us”

“Monetization is now very much linked to Google, YouTube adopts many policies from the parent company. Advertising companies are putting a lot of pressure on this because they don't want to be associated with sensitive content.

In addition, producers are becoming more and more independent thanks to donation platforms like Patreon. That’s why the guidelines are constantly being optimized,”

says YouTube marketing consultant Julian Banse to pressetext.

According to an update from YouTube, videos about the new coronavirus fall into the “Sensitive Events” category. This classification applies to dangerous, one-off incidents such as natural disasters. Because the new coronavirus is no longer considered a short-term event but has become an everyday topic, YouTube is making exceptions for videos.

“The most important currency is authenticity”

“YouTube is still cautiously approaching the topic of Coronavrus. While it's risky for influencers to address sensitive topics, their most important currency is authenticity, and it's an issue on everyone's lips.

The algorithms often don’t understand the context of a video and make snap judgments,”

criticizes Banse.

In the coming days, YouTube will allow monetization of coronavirus videos from certain channels, including news channels. However, the video platform wants to crack down on fake news about the virus. YouTube only relaxed its guidelines for producers of sensitive content last year ( pressetext reported ).
