The claim
Since monkeypox appeared in several countries, there has been a noticeable number of hits on our older articles about monkey brothels. Apparently users suspect a connection.
Our conclusion
Even though the disease is called “monkeypox,” monkeys have nothing to do with its origins and current spread. The virus was only first discovered in monkeys in 1958, but it is not a specific monkey disease.
We noticed that since monkeypox appeared in several countries, there has been a noticeable number of hits on older articles from us that talk about monkey brothels. Therefore, before wrong conclusions are drawn, we would like to make it clear: monkey brothels and monkey pox have nothing to do with each other!
Where the name “monkeypox” comes from
The name “monkeypox” comes from the first documented cases of the disease in animals in 1958, when two outbreaks occurred in monkeys kept for research purposes. Since it was assumed at the time that this type of smallpox occurred specifically in monkeys, it was given the name monkeypox.
The first confirmed human case occurred in 1970 , when the virus was isolated from a child suspected of smallpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since then, monkeypox has been detected in several other Central and West African countries, with most infections occurring in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Today we know that the virus not spread from monkeys to humans , and monkeys are not the main vectors of viruses. African rodents are considered this.
And what about the monkey brothels?
The claim that there are entire orangutan brothels has been circulating since 2007, when Michelle Desilets, former director of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation UK, in an interview about "Pony", a female orangutan who lives in a prostitute village in Borneo was found.
But since then the story has been inflated: at some point the prostitute village became a complete orangutan brothel, with the same photos of “Pony” being used over and over again as illustrations. On Facebook, there are very lurid stories about “zoophilistic horror houses of joy” in which “fornication, perversity and sodomy” prevail.
But the highlight is: All stories about alleged monkey brothels are based on a single, documented case from 2002, namely that of the orangutan lady “Pony”, who was found in a prostitute village in Borneo.
A few weeks ago we contacted the association BOS Germany (BOS = Borneo Orangutan Survival), operator of the website orangutan.de , who kindly told us in great detail about the case and the general situation of orangutans in Indonesia and Thailand. You can find the complete interview HERE read.
Conclusion
Even though the disease currently in the media is called “monkeypox,” monkeys have nothing to do with its origin and current spread. The virus was only first discovered in monkeys in 1958, but it is not a specific monkey disease. Transmission of the virus in monkey brothels, for which there is no real evidence, is also more than unlikely.
