UPDATE 12:29 p.m.:
There has now been a press conference. In it, the zoo director and the police explained that so-called sky lanterns were also seen not far from the zoo. Sky lanterns are made of paper or papyrus and are prohibited missiles in North Rhine-Westphalia. Two of these missiles were also found.
At least a little bit of good news: two chimpanzees were found alive after the fire . They are slightly injured, but otherwise fine. There is a young animal and an older chimpanzee.

UPDATE
5:50 a.m. Our worst fears have become reality. There are no surviving animals in the monkey house.
The Gorilla Garden was spared. Kidogo and his family are doing well.
The previous official press report :
On the night of today's Wednesday (January 1, 2020), the monkey house in the Krefeld Zoo caught fire for reasons that are still unclear. More than 30 animals died. The police have started investigations.
At 12:38 a.m., residents informed the fire department about the fire. The emergency services were on site a few minutes later. When we arrived, the monkey house was already fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other zoo buildings. The adjacent gorilla garden and its residents are not affected.
The institutions and authorities involved will provide details in a press conference. It will take place today, Wednesday, January 1st, 2020 at 12 p.m. Location: Krefeld Zoo, Uerdinger Straße 377, 47800 Krefeld (972)
The follow-up press report :
The Krefeld fire department was called to a fire in the Krefeld Zoo at 12:35 a.m. today. When they arrived at the scene, the zoo's monkey house was already fully engulfed in flames. It quickly became clear that the building could not be saved due to the severe fire development. Therefore, the fire was initially fought extensively to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjacent gorilla enclosure and the kangaroo enclosure.
This also succeeded. At this point, due to the strong fire development, it was assumed that none of the more than 30 animals in the monkey house would be able to survive the fire. Thanks to the extinguishing measures, the fire was under control around 6 a.m., so that the emergency services could be reduced and follow-up work was carried out.
During this work, the fire department's emergency services were able to hear noises coming from the monkey house. It was then decided that the fire department would check an area of the building together with zoo employees. It was discovered that there were two chimpanzees in the building who were only slightly injured.
They were anesthetized by zoo employees and taken to the gorilla house. Both stations from the professional fire brigade, as well as the volunteer fire brigade and the rescue service, were in action.
Since all units of the Krefeld fire department were involved in the operation at the zoo or in other smaller operations in Krefeld, the stations of the professional fire department were manned by the Siemens AG company fire department and the Mehrbusch-Lank fire department. They spontaneously offered their help. The German Red Cross was on site to provide supplies to the emergency services. Around 150 emergency services were deployed.
