Monkeypox is an infectious disease caused by viruses, for which the original hosts are unclear, but rodents seem very likely.
Monkeys and humans are “mishosts,” meaning that the virus is not as well adapted to these hosts as it is to its “main hosts.”

infection

“Transmission from person to person is rare and only possible through close contact, but can occur through contact with body fluids and the typical skin changes (e.g. vesicle contents, scabs) of those infected with monkeypox,” according to the Robert Koch Institute . According to the RKI, it is currently not certain whether monkeypox “can be spread through direct sexual transmission routes (e.g. through semen or vaginal secretions), but direct skin contact with lesions during sexual activities can spread the virus. Particularly high virus concentrations are found in the typical smallpox lesions (skin changes). Transmission is possible even when non-specific symptoms occur (such as fever, headache and body aches) before the skin lesions appear through face-to-face contact through excreted respiratory secretions.”

The incubation period is around 7 – 21, but usually 10 – 14 days. Infected people are contagious for the entire duration of the illness (2 – 3 weeks).

A vaccination against human smallpox prevents infection by 85%. However, the proportion of the world's population with this vaccination protection is declining.

Symptoms in severe cases

Fever, headache, back and sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, rash on the face and other parts of the body (resembles chickenpox or syphilis).
