The claim
Allegedly, mRNA vaccines destroy the vascular walls of vaccinated people and also their unborn children.
Our conclusion
Based on expert surveys and the results of numerous studies, there is no evidence that mRNA vaccinations attack vessel walls and can therefore lead to dangerous diseases.
The mRNA vaccines against the coronavirus have been officially approved since December 2020. With the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) saying that there is basically no need to fear serious side effects, more than 63 million people in Germany were vaccinated. But since research began on the vaccines and their approvals, false information and warnings against the new vaccination technology have been circulating again and again, especially from critics.
In mid-August of this year, thousands of social network users shared a video clip in which microbiologist Sucharit Bhakdi made a claim. Accordingly, the mRNA vaccines would destroy the vascular walls of vaccinated people and also their unborn children. However, many other experts stated that, based on current data, this did not happen. So are the mRNA vaccines dangerous after all?

Vaccine opponents’ claim reaches thousands of people
Microbiologist Bhakdi claims in a short shared excerpt from an AUF1 interview: “The risk that the vessel walls will be affected if you inject a gene-based vaccine into them is basically 100 percent.”Auf1 is an Austrian channel that spreads conspiracy stories. In an article, ZDF the channel as a “home for conspiracy theorists, lateral thinkers and Putin fans”.
Thousands of users are currently sharing exactly this interview excerpt as a video recording on Facebook and Twitter, but especially on Telegram. Bhakdi is a prominent anti-vaccination activist who, according to “nd aktuell”, was already charged with sedition in May 2022 and was already noticed due to numerous false reports.
Vessel walls affected – what does that mean?
If the vessel walls are attacked due to the mRNA vaccines, as Bhakdi claims, this means that certain antibodies from the immune system are attacking the vessel walls, which can lead to vascular inflammation, also known as vasculitis in specialist circles. According to “ netdoktor ”, this is a very rare disease of the blood vessels, which can cause symptoms ranging from mild fever to coughing up blood to shortness of breath and organ infarctions.
Arteriosclerosis can also be a result of vascular disease. Here the volume of the vessels is reduced by deposits in the vessel walls, they are narrowed, so to speak, which in the worst case could lead to serious consequences such as heart attacks or strokes in certain areas of the body, such as carotid arteries or cerebral vessels.
In any case, vascular damage, which is claimed to occur after vaccinations, is very dangerous.
How likely is vascular damage associated with mRNA vaccines?
The PEI regularly publishes safety reports on reported suspected cases of side effects from the mRNA vaccines. However, these cases do not yet mean an actual connection. In the most recent report , which covers the period from the start of the vaccination campaign to June 30, 2022, nothing appears that explicitly indicates “infected” or “destroyed blood vessels”. German Society for Neurology, there is also no increased risk of stroke due to the mRNA vaccination.
Spokeswoman Susanne Stöcker, who is already aware of the allegations circulating on the Internet, explains on behalf of the PEI and to “ AFP-Faktencheck ”: “Dubious allegations do not become more likely because they are made once a year by other people and with a new focus be reheated. These rumors have already been spread several times in 2021, for example by Byram Bridle and Robert Malone .” Stöcker went on to say that the PEI was not aware of any cases of affected or destroyed blood vessels .
Very low reporting rate of vascular inflammation
The Paul Ehrlich Institute received 323,684 suspected case reports of side effects or vaccination complications. However, the proportion of those clinical pictures that have something to do with blood vessels in various forms (e.g. vasculitis or other vascular inflammation and blockages) is less than 0.2 percent. This means that out of 1,000 people vaccinated, a maximum of 2 people were reported to have a similar clinical picture to vascular inflammation. However, it must also be noted that it cannot be confirmed that these diseases were actually caused by mRNA vaccines.
Other experts and institutes also confirm the PEI’s results
Falko Fend , medical director at the Institute of Pathology, said: “From our work there is no evidence of a change in the vascular walls caused by mRNA vaccines, even after examining deaths that were temporally related, but without a causal connection, to an mRNA vaccine. Vaccination occurred.”
“We are not aware of any data that would support such a claim. The current data in the preliminary evaluation in the register does not indicate this either,” reports Saskia von Stillfried and Rattonitz from the Institute of Pathology at RWTH Aachen.
Johannes Oldenburg , Director of the Institute for Hemophilia and Transfusion Medicine at the University Hospital of Bonn, also explained: “It is true that the coronavirus itself can lead to endothelial cell damage to the vessel walls. But this is not the case for the vaccines.” The endothelial cell damage involves the innermost cell layer of the blood vessels.
The latter quote in turn supports the point that the reported cases with a clinical picture similar to inflammation of the blood vessels could not have been caused by the vaccination, but rather by the coronavirus itself.
mRNA vaccinations cause miscarriages? Studies refute this aspect
Bhakdi's claim that vaccinations against Corona would lead to miscarriages is also not the first. At the beginning of November 2021, AFP Fact Check the claims of a gynecologist that were very similar to Bhakdi's.
Nevertheless, expert surveys were also carried out regarding the current assumption: “There was no significantly increased number of miscarriages or stillbirths in the Dresden University Hospital in 2021/2022. The mRNA vaccines against Covid cannot cause placental cells to be destroyed in pregnant women. “The mRNA vaccination cannot cause the immune system to attack the child’s vascular walls,” explains Cahit Birdir , senior physician in obstetrics and prenatal diagnostics at the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Dresden.
The senior obstetrician at Schleswig-Holstein University Hospital, Ulrich Pecks, explained: “There actually tends to be a reduction in stillbirths among vaccinated women compared to unvaccinated women. “The hypothesis of more stillbirths due to vaccination is therefore untenable.”
Scottish Health Authority also said on January 13, 2022: “The low vaccination rate among pregnant women must be addressed to protect the health of women and infants during the ongoing pandemic.”
Summary
Based on expert surveys and the results of numerous studies, there is no evidence that corona vaccinations attack vascular walls and can therefore lead to dangerous diseases. mRNA vaccinations during pregnancy also pose no risk to unborn children.
