Summer is now finally over. The (too warm) October is coming to an end with temperatures typical of the season. Soon it will be even colder because “Winter is coming”. Winter, also with its pleasant sides. A biscuit here, a mulled wine there.
Especially when it's cold and you're heading to one of the many winter and Christmas markets, you like to warm yourself up with a hot drink. That should help!
But what about alcoholic liquid heaters? Do punch and mulled wine fulfill what they are said to do? We do the fact check!
Punch & mulled wine: a sobering view
In the end they probably fail because the alcoholic hot drinks don't really warm us up. It's just an initial feeling of warmth when drinking mulled wine.
The result is even worse, because punch and the like end up having the opposite effect: they promote cooling down! Because the alcohol causes blood vessels to dilate, more blood flows to the surface of the skin. However, on the surface the heat is released quickly due to the cold environment.
The Austrian Chamber of Pharmacists, for example, says very clearly:
For every 50 grams of alcohol, which corresponds to around 2-3 servings of mulled wine, punch or Jagertee (see exact conversion below), the body temperature drops by half a degree.
So if you think you can keep warm with alcohol in winter, you're wrong.
