We were amazed when we read the comments on Twitter about our article “The “Non-settled Balkan Migration Schnitzel””!

We'll just leave the discussion that arose there aside, much more interesting was the little fun fact that we weren't aware of and that, after a quick check, turned out to be not a fake. Did you know what the mullet is called in English?

For all those who don't know, have forgotten or even consciously wanted to forget: mullet is the abbreviation for "short at the front, long at the back" and describes a hairstyle style that we children of the 60s and 70s were "allowed" to experience live in the 80s. , in some cases even worn and endured.

And now, really, this hairstyle must have been sooooo typically German that in English the typical mullet is not just called “mullet”, but also sometimes called “german mullet”. Although this is not always the case, the term mullet alone stands for the mullet.

But!... But... if you think that would be halfway funny, then you don't have the Danes on your radar. Because in Denmark the mullet is Bundesliga-hår (“Bundesliga hair”). This is neither a fake nor an isolated case: the mullet must have been so prevalent among German Bundesliga players that people in Hungary and Slovenia also speak of “Bundesliga hair” when they mean the mullet. In France, when people think of the mullet, they also think of German football players (“coiffure de footballeur allerand”).

By the way, the Italians do too, only here they use the expressions in the local language and say “capelli alla tedesca”, which means something like “German hair”. The Dutch are quite similar and the famous New Kids wear the “Duitse mat”.
