At the end of April 2022, an anonymous caller alerted customs that a man from Krefeld was offering a mummified lower leg with a foot for sale on the Internet. The Krefeld police started the investigation to rule out that the body part was not recent and possibly belonged to the victim of a homicide. Apparently the seller's parents brought the foot with them from a vacation in Egypt to Germany in the early 1980s.
Mummy foot actually dates back to Egyptian antiquity
Also the Egyptologist Dr. Robert Kuhn from the Egyptian Museum Berlin finally confirmed: The foot actually comes from Egyptian antiquity. The exact age and exact origin are not known. The seller did not commit any criminal offense, but the foot would have been smuggled out of Egypt at the time: at that time, ancient objects already had to be presented to an examination commission for an official export permit. They no longer had any human remains.

On Thursday (September 8, 2022), Krefeld's police chief Ursula Mecklenbrauck handed over the mummified foot to the Egyptian ambassador Khaled Galal Eldin Abdelhamid in Berlin.
“When it was clear that the mummified foot had not left Egypt legally,” said Mecklenbrauck, “we immediately prepared its return together with the Egyptian embassy.”
