Mayor never lectured Muslim parents about pork in school cafeterias and the surprising truth behind the seemingly recurring scandal
We live in an age where information can travel across the internet in a matter of seconds and spread like wildfire. But what happens when a piece of news persists for years even though it has long since been revealed to be false? Welcome to the world of Internet hoaxes, where a chain letter has been making the rounds and heating up emotions for a decade. A look behind the scenes shows how persistent false reports can be and why it is important to rely on fact checks even in times of viral spread.
The Mysterious Beginning: Canada, 2013
It all started ten years ago in beautiful Canada, more precisely in the city of Dorval, a suburb of Montreal. The story sounded shocking: Muslim parents are said to have called for pork to be banned from school canteens. But how could such a story even come about?
From genealogy hoax to global phenomenon
The origins of the “Muslim parents call for pork withdrawal” hoax lies in Canada, where it began as a seemingly harmless joke. But over time it developed into a real hoax that began its journey around the world. In the years that followed, the chain letter appeared again and again, traveled from Canada to the Netherlands , to France and finally ended up in Austria .
CANADA: Muslim parents have called for pork to be banned from school cafeterias.

FRANCE: Muslim parents have called for pork to be banned from all school canteens in the Metz suburb of Borny.

NETHERLANDS: Muslim parents “demand” the withdrawal of pork from a school in a city in the Netherlands.

AUSTRIA: Muslim parents “demand” the withdrawal of pork from a school in a town somewhere in Austria

The formula remained the same: Muslim parents “demanded” the withdrawal of pork from school canteens, and the respective mayor responded with a seemingly strict statement on integration.
The power of repetition and emotion
But why is the hoax so persistent? The answer may lie in human psychology. The combination of controversy, questions of identity, and emotion make this story a perfect candidate for sharing and dissemination. The outrage over supposed demands and the mayors' supposed steadfastness reinforce the need to share the message with others.
The Truth Revealed: Fact Checks and Education
But reality looks different. Years ago, in 2015, the city of Dorval denied the false report and emphasized that the mayor had never made such a statement.

Briefly, the content of this denial : The report refers to the mayor's alleged statement and the stories that have formed around this statement. The city of Dorval and the mayor who is said to have made the statement make it clear that these statements are false and were not made by the mayor or a city employee. The newspaper report considers the story to be a hoax, which it believes comes from the USA and whose similar words are said to have been uttered by a Belgian mayor in 2013. This was also a hoax that spread worldwide.
Nevertheless, many Internet users ignored this clarification and continued to share the chain letter as if it were true. This shows the danger of false reports and the importance of fact checks. The truth can be suppressed, but it will eventually find its way.

Conclusion
For almost ten years, fake news has stubbornly moved across the vastness of the Internet, changing its identity and even crossing national borders. This incident is a reminder of the devastating power of false reports that can take hold in people's minds even after they have long since been exposed as unfounded falsehoods.
In an age where news travels in seconds, fact checking and critical thinking are essential tools. It is up to each of us to consider carefully before sharing or accepting information. The case of the recurring hoax reminds us that while the truth may take time to emerge, it triumphs in the end.
