Videos showing the artist Xavier Naidoo have appeared on social media. The videos have cryptic text and are recorded differently.

Metaphors of wolves, allusions to people shouting “I am here”, the narrative of daily murders by guests: these clips, which come from messenger groups and became public, have caused a lot of fuss about Xavier Naidoo ( we reported ).

RTL itself probably delivered the most profound reaction by removing Naidoo as a juror from the casting show “Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS)” ( compare ).

In addition to these consequences, there were tons of reactions to the topic on social media, which ultimately can be sorted into two camps. On the one hand, the understanding of the words and the support that an important point is being addressed here, but on the other hand, the statements that Naidoo expresses himself in a racist and unreflective manner and thus sows hatred.

Dissenting voices see racism

One of the most prominent statements was probably made by Pro7. The station's official account (verified) posted: “ Dear Xavier #Naidoo, no one has ever made a society better with hate, incitement and alternative facts. She neither.

There are also reactions from journalists on Twitter who also reject Naidoo's clips and statements or even see an intention in them. Hanning Voigts, editor of the Frankfurter Rundschau writes:

Xavier #Naidoo feels misunderstood. Everyone understood him exactly right.

Georg Restle sees it very similarly. The editorial director of the Monitor (ARD) program said on Twitter: “No stage for racists and intellectual arsonists. Especially not to Hanau, Halle, Kassel!”

Naidoo: Many supporters

But there are also many other voices on social media who see his statements as a legitimate opinion. Short note: In fact, the metaphorically packaged statement “a dead German every day due to a refugee in Germany” is not correct, we are therefore moving in the area of a narrative or the rhetorical device of exaggeration.

Under Naidoo's posting, in which he tries to explain the situation, there are over 12,000 comments (as of March 12, 2020, 9:30 a.m.). The discussion there is quite lively, with fans and opponents discussing the videos.

For example, an account without a profile or cover photo posts below the posting:

Xavier is a sincere, likeable artist with great social commitment. I believe every word of his explanation. His family came to Germany and he knows exactly what he is talking about. Xavier is and remains a wonderful person with a big ❤️ for justice. Thank you Xavier

From other comments you can read that these videos and the statements do not contain racism, but that it is more about interpretations. As this comment sums it up: “I have heard and read this text. I couldn't sense or sense any xenophobia from it. Everyone has their own interpretation. I think you should give the artist this artistic freedom. Anyone who wants to get it wrong gets it wrong.”

There are many people who are now encouraging the artist. In various places you can also read thanks that a prominent person like Naidoo has attacked and dealt with the topic.

Thank you Xavier for your courage to express yourself freely. The sometimes extreme reactions show once again that freedom of expression on certain topics has not existed for a long time. Freedom of expression also includes respecting opinions and not immediately putting people with different opinions in a corner.

The clips that have emerged have recently brought Naidoo back into conversation. The artist may not have lost much of his popularity as a result, but he may have created polarity.
