NATO is a political and military alliance. Its most important goal is the defense and security of its 30 member states in Europe and North America. The alliance was launched in Washington in April 1949 in light of the perceived threat from the then Soviet Union. Originally there were 12 members. The most recent expansion was in 2020. Germany joined the alliance in 1955.
The civilian headquarters is in Brussels, the military headquarters in Mons, Belgium, commands nine command centers. The strategy headquarters is in Norfolk in the USA.
NATO missions take place worldwide on the ground, in the air and at sea.
Armed forces operate in Kosovo and the Mediterranean, and there is a training mission in Iraq. It also works with the African Union. NATO also carries out air surveillance tasks for its members.
The principle of common defense is at the core of the founding treaty. According to Article 5, an attack on one member is considered an attack on the entire Alliance. This alliance case was first declared in 2001 - in response to the September 11th attacks in the USA.
