Netflix: Netflix customers beware! They are currently trying to tell you that your member accounts have incorrect information!
Netflix customers are currently being asked to update their payment information on a website. Apparently this has to happen so that the account remains valid. The problem with this request: Anyone who does this is sending sensitive data to fraudsters. They can then go shopping at their victim's expense and commit crimes under their name.
Criminals use the fake Netflix message “Your Netflix Membership is on hold” to try to steal credit card details from Internet users. In order to achieve their goal, they claim that the customer's Netflix account is temporarily unusable:
We recently failed to validate your payment information we hold on record for your account,
Therefore we need to ask you to complete a brief validation process in order to verify your billing and payment details.

The link from the email to confirm your data leads to a website that claims to be Netflix. As soon as you open the web address, our protection software reports and warns that the page you are visiting is a phishing website. The website was blocked at the same time.
Our protection software reports a website that is trying to steal data:
Without protection software, you can access a website that resembles the Netflix login. Criminals hope that users will log in using their login details on these fake sites and thus be able to access this information. In addition to access data and address data, sensitive bank data is also requested at this point.
By the way, you can recognize fake Netflix messages at these points:
- Netflix never sends emails seeking payment information from you. But that's exactly what the message is about: "you may want to update your payment details.".
- Netflix appears to be the sender of the message. However, the email address used “webmaster@strangeaddress.com” shows you that this information is incorrect.
- If you move your computer mouse over the “Update account now” link, a dialog box will show you that you are visiting the website “strangewebsite.com”. The domain is a clear indication that the website is not owned by Netflix.
- If you open Netflix manually, you will see that, contrary to the claim in the message, you can still use the streaming platform. The statement that your “account (…) is on hold” is therefore incorrect.
- The alleged Netflix website where you are supposed to disclose your data is unencrypted. You can tell this by the lack of a security lock and the missing https addition in the address bar of your web browser. You must never provide personal information on unsecured connections. Otherwise, third parties can read them and use them for crimes.
Password equality!
In addition, there is always the risk that you could lose several accounts at once if you pass on your data to fraudsters. Many users' laziness with passwords could lead to fraudsters trying out the newly captured username/password combination in other places. Since many people use the same access data for several services, these accesses are also at risk!
This is how you protect yourself:
Basically, security software can help preventatively ! Despite all caution, it can still happen from time to time that you have fallen victim to a phishing attack and have unintentionally disclosed your personal data to third parties. The important thing is: Don't panic, but act immediately!
So that you actually know what to do in an emergency, here are our step-by-step instructions:
- Contact the company for which your personal user or login information was stolen immediately. Please call customer service to have your account blocked. Banks in particular have a blocking hotline that can be reached around the clock and is available specifically for such and similar cases. Describe your case and your account or user area will no longer be accessible with the old login data.
- Log in to your user account and check whether you can still log in. If this is still possible, go immediately to the area where you can change your current login details. Set a new password and, if possible, also change the user name and contact address.
- Check immediately whether account changes or transactions have already been made , as criminals are usually very quick. Check whether, for example, goods have been purchased or debits have been made for which you are not responsible. If this is the case, inform the customer service of the respective provider immediately.
- Document all abnormalities . Take screenshots, print out bank statements and the phishing email, or forward the email to the company in whose name the cybercriminals sent the phishing email.
- Contact a lawyer who specializes in internet fraud , describe your case and submit all documents related to the fraud. You should contact the lawyer even if you have not yet reported any damage.
- 2 -factor authentication (if offered) prevents access even if fraudsters have obtained the access data through phishing.
