The claim

A video claims to prove that the Netherlands is now using armored personnel carriers against demonstrating farmers.

Our conclusion

The armored vehicles belong to a Dutch armed force and were on their way to an exercise.

Farmers in the Netherlands have been protesting against planned environmental regulations for several weeks ( we reported ).
A video on a news site “for self-thinkers” (archived HERE) shows a blue, tank-like vehicle filmed from a car on the highway. But these are not armored personnel carriers, nor are they on the way to farmers' protests.

The claim

The widely circulated July 5 article with the video (archived HERE ) claimed that the Dutch government would now use armored personnel carriers against protesting farmers.

However, the video is not up to date: It was shared back in June, also with the claim that they were tanks on their way to The Hague:

At that time, on June 21st, it was claimed that the vehicles were on their way to The Hague because farmers' protests were supposed to take place there on June 22nd - which was already wrong at the time, as it was already clear on June 15th that the protest had been canceled.

What can really be seen

Here is a screenshot from the video in which one of the blue vehicles on the highway can be clearly seen:

One of the blue vehicles from the video

The vehicles actually have tank tracks, but are blue with the abbreviation NL and the inscription “ Koninklijke Marechaussee ” – which already leads us to the solution.

The Koninklijke Marechaussee is a Dutch armed force that reports to the Ministry of Defense. It primarily carries out civilian tasks, such as monitoring borders and securing large airports.

The vehicles are YPR armored personnel carriers , which are armed with machine guns and have space for 3 to 10 people. Among other things, they are also used in crowd control and riot control.

But where were they headed when the protest in The Hague on June 22nd was canceled a week before?
The solution: They drove to exercises that take place several times a year - so it's not unusual to see these vehicles on the highway.

On June 21, the military police vehicles started from Wassenaar and drove through or via Leiden, Leidschendam, Maasdijk, Rotterdam The Hague Airport, Bergschenhoek and Alphen aan de Rijn. So even their route was announced in advance so that no one is worried.

Conclusion

However, it is not the case that such vehicles are not used in connection with the farmers' protests. Yes, but not in the aggressive sense that is intended to create the impression. At the end of June/beginning of July, for example, the vehicles were used to close the roads to Schiphol in an emergency so that farmers could not block access to the airport with their tractors (see HERE and HERE ).

By the way, the Netherlands no longer has any larger armored vehicles: the last of its own tanks were sold to Germany, and the last Dutch tank fired a projectile in 2011. Since then, they have no tanks of their own, but can lease these tanks sold to Germany in an emergency .

In any case, the video does not show any use of the vehicles against the demonstrators: in the video they were on their way to an exercise. The vehicles are actually used, but only sparingly and not actively against the protesting farmers, but rather to prevent blockages at important junctions such as the airports.
