Claims have recently emerged on social media that an electric car charging station in Neuruppin, Brandenburg, is powered by a diesel generator. However, this assumption turned out to be wrong.
It is this statement: “In Neuruppin, the charging station for electric cars is powered by a diesel generator. That's how it works with the energy transition. It must be a really good feeling when you, as a green person, charge your electric car there.”

The fact check
The fast charging station in question is part of the range offered by the Brandenburg company “me energy”. It is located on the grounds of the regional court in Neuruppin. Contrary to claims doing the rounds on social media, this charging station does not run on diesel. Instead, bioethanol is used, a renewable fuel made from biomass and starchy plants.
The use of bioethanol is not a coincidence, but a targeted step to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Although the production of bioethanol itself releases some greenhouse gases, the overall balance is still significantly better than that of diesel. The Brandenburg company that operates the charging station emphasizes the use of “renewable raw materials” in the production of the bioethanol used.
There are different views on why the charging station requires a generator and is not simply connected to the local power grid. While some point out that the grid may not be sufficiently developed to support a fast charging station, others emphasize that they were never consulted before the decision to use the generator was made.
This case is an example of how easily misinformation can spread on social media. The real story here, however, is that Neuruppin is home to an innovative bioethanol-powered electric car charging station that is part of the solution to the fight against climate change.
Conclusion: Neuruppin shows how technology and innovations in the field of renewable energies can be used to charge electric cars efficiently and sustainably. The charging station there uses bioethanol instead of diesel - an important contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the discussions and confusion surrounding connecting the charging station to the local power grid also underline that there are still challenges to be overcome. Both clear communication and strategic planning are required here in order to implement sustainable and efficient solutions.
