A variant of the GPT-3 language model developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that can answer questions and generate text. It offers users the opportunity to create unique and non-plagiarized content, but this comes with increased risk since AI language models are auto-completion tools that have no inherent sense of objectivity. In other words, they are capable of producing factually incorrect results, which has led to the ICML banning AI-generated texts.

Works containing text generated by a large language model such as ChatGPT are prohibited unless the text produced is presented as part of the experimental analysis of the work.

ICML: “ Temporary policy: ChatGPT is banned

One of the main problems is that it can be difficult to distinguish between texts created entirely by AI and those that have been “polished” or “edited” by AI. This has led to a number of organizations such as Stack Overflow and the New York City Department of Education banning the use of ChatGPT.

Due to concerns about negative impacts on student learning and the security and accuracy of content, access to ChatGPT on New York City Public Schools networks and devices is restricted.

New York City Department of Education spokesperson Jenna Lyle told Chalkbeat

The use of AI tools such as ChatGPT has also raised a number of ethical questions, such as: B. the question of who owns the results of such systems and whether texts and images generated by AI should be viewed as new or as mere derivatives of existing works. Additionally, many fear that the availability of such tools will lead to bias against native English speakers, as AI-generated texts can be used to “level the playing field” for those who do not speak or write English as a native language.

Since there is no completely reliable method to detect AI-generated text, ICML does not proactively enforce its ban by running posts through detector software. Instead, it relies on traditional social mechanisms to enforce academic norms. AI can be used to polish, edit or write texts, but it will still be up to humans to judge their value.

Ultimately, it is important to remember that the use of AI tools like ChatGPT should be monitored and used with caution. While they can be incredibly useful for authors and researchers, they also pose a number of risks and ethical considerations that should not be overlooked.
