Crizpy: Let's put social media where it's most fun.
As long as they are charged with the right electricity, electric cars are a low-emission alternative to conventional petrol or diesel vehicles. The only drawback: the comparatively long loading times. Apart from Tesla's Supercharger, electric car drivers have to be prepared for charging times of at least 30 to 60 minutes. Depending on the model, charging takes between 8 and 14 hours at home sockets.
However, long charging times spoil people's enjoyment of electric cars. US researchers now want to remedy this.
The research team led by Chao-Yang Wang from Pennsylvania State University has built a battery that can be almost completely recharged within 10 minutes.
This means that the charging process would be almost comparable to the time it takes to fill a tank at a conventional petrol pump. How do they do it? With warmth. They have given the battery a built-in heater. If conventional batteries are charged too quickly, they form a metallic layer on the electrodes, which can destroy the battery. However, if you heat the battery to up to 60 degrees for a short time, this deposit does not form. A large amount of energy can now be pumped into the cells within 10 minutes. The battery must then cool down again.
