Crizpy: Let's put social media where it's most fun.
Many structures of the human brain remain unexplored to this day. However, previously unknown brain functions could now be examined in more detail. This could lead to new treatment options for a wide variety of diseases.
Although the brain only makes up two to three percent of the human body weight, it consumes 20% of the oxygen in the blood and 15% of the power generated by our heart.
Scientists at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia have now been able to document previously undiscovered brain functions that are helpful for a better understanding of the organ. The researchers have managed to decipher the structures of special brain cells. These cells were only discovered a few years ago. Their functions were largely unknown. These so-called astrocytes store energy and supply it to the neurons. Research into these cells helps to better understand how memory and learning work in the brain. This can help treat illnesses such as depression, Alzheimer's and strokes. “We could help slow down these diseases by targeting these cells.”
It is believed that the brain supplies itself with energy via the network structure of the astrocytes. Thanks to further studies, we know that lactate plays an important role in memory formation. It can potentially cure depression or help reduce subsequent damage after a stroke. The aim now is to investigate how the brain uses lactate and how astrocytes are involved in this process.
