But actually. A new phishing scam is circulating via email. The subject of these emails states that a new fax document was sent from a scanner. And yes, faxes are still a common communication channel in many companies.

Phishing attempts with alleged faxes

Now you shouldn't imagine anything wrong. Of course, we're not talking about a piece of paper that comes out of the receiving device with a squeaky sound, but rather about online faxes via email.

An analysis by the IT security company Certitude has shown that phishing attempts are started using fake emails. And here the subject is that you supposedly received a fax from a scanner. This document should be accessed via a link in the email.

The emails are sent via the US company “Sendgrid”. This is a platform that is better known for sending marketing material. The advantage for the fraudsters here is that the spam filters usually do not react to them.

In addition, the scammers have also thought of further obscuring their intentions by including Google Translate in the link to bypass protections that detect a trustworthy Google domain. The URL is therefore disguised as “https[:]//ATTACKER-URL.translate.goog” and does not trigger a warning.

As Centitude discovered during its analysis, the links contained in the email lead to a Russian domain. If you access the link, connections are also established to other domains and IPs that are classified as dangerous.

Recommendation

Under no circumstances should you enter access data here.

The best thing to do is not to click on the links at all and to delete such emails!
