The dispute over the One Love captain's armband has been decided. All seven European nations bowed to FIFA and Qatar and stopped wearing the armband out of fear of yellow cards and sanctions
OPINION OF THE UEFA WORKING GROUP
ONE LOVE BRACELET
Following FIFA's announcement of sporting sanctions for wearing the “One Love” armband at World Cup matches in Qatar, the associations involved in the UEFA working group issued a statement.
FIFA has made it very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the pitch. This is a unique event in the history of the World Championships. As national associations, we cannot put our players in a situation where they have to face sporting sanctions, including warnings. That's why we asked the captains not to wear the armbands during FIFA World Cup matches. We were willing to pay fines normally imposed for violations of the equipment regulations and strongly advocated the wearing of the armband. However, we cannot put our players in a situation where they are warned or even forced to leave the pitch.
Neuendorf: “Unprecedented event in World Cup history”
We are very frustrated with FIFA's decision. We wrote to FIFA in September informing us of our desire to wear the One Love armband to actively support inclusion in football and have received no response. Our players and coaches are disappointed, they are strong supporters of inclusion and will show their support in other ways.
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf said: “We are experiencing an unprecedented event in World Cup history. We will not fight the confrontation brought about by FIFA on the back of Manuel Neuer.”
