The claim
Baking soda is an effective anti-cancer drug. When taken, it acts like a Trojan horse in the cancer cell, stopping the spread of the cells and possibly even making the disease curable.
Our conclusion
The spread of cancer cells cannot be prevented by regularly consuming baking soda, as the body immediately eliminates it to protect itself. Instead, too much can lead to kidney failure and other side effects. Caution!
Text from the Internet: Cancer cells don't like baking soda
A text currently circulating on several websites believes that cancer is much easier to cure than previously thought. Accordingly, baking soda, also known as baking soda or bicarbonate, can “avoid the formation process of cancer cells and impair growth.” To make this possible, the person affected should simply mix baking powder with a sweet mixture such as honey or maple syrup and take three teaspoons of the concentrate per day.
On the development of cancer
According to science, cancer is caused by the uncontrolled proliferation of cells in the body. The reason for this is usually minor damage to the genetic material of these cells.

In contrast, the baking soda article links to a video that attempts to explain that a type of fungus is the cause of cancer. Jutta Hübner, Professor of Integrative Oncology at Jena University Hospital, describes this as a “fairy tale”.
So why baking soda?
However, the article goes further and promises a way to prevent cancer or at least stop the cells from spreading. The article in question says: “Cancer cells love sugar, which they literally devour, and if you introduce the bicarbonate-sugar complex into the body, you are introducing a Trojan horse into the cancer cell.”
According to the German Press Agency (dpa), the German Cancer Research Center summarizes the idea behind alternative medicine as follows: When a person consumes sugar, the cancer cells metabolize it, creating lactic acid and an acidic environment. As a result, the cancer cells enter a kind of resting state and therefore pause cell division. Since the latter is necessary for the body to be able to respond to cancer therapy, the baking soda or baking soda is intended to eliminate an acidic environment and the dormant state. In theory, this would work well because the baking soda, as a basic agent, counteracts the acid and supposedly allows the body to respond better and faster to cancer therapy.
But that can't work, says expert Hübner, and at the same time issues a warning: "From a scientific point of view, it's very clear: Warning to everyone not to fall for it!"
Idea of alternative medicine probably from earlier studies
Similar things were tested on mice in 2009 and 2018 . The results of this research suggest that a combination of reduced acidity and increased oxygen supply makes cancer cells more vulnerable to attack. However, the cancer research center explains that these results cannot be easily transferred to humans: “You have to differentiate very clearly between animal experiments and humans,” says Jutta Hübner.
The balance of acids and bases in the human body is very precisely controlled and even “the smallest deviations immediately lead to life-threatening clinical pictures,” explains the professor of oncology. “In a healthy body - this also includes a cancer patient , as long as there is no multi-organ failure - the body's own mechanisms are very quick and extremely effective in immediately bringing the pH value back to the healthy level. Everything you add from outside is buffered away.”
No effect – rather harmful to health
This means that even in the case of cancer, increasing the amount of baking soda or other alkaline diet has no advantage, as the body eliminates these bases very quickly. So they become meaningless.
On the contrary, you should be extremely careful when taking these substances. If there is an excess, there is still a risk of damage from baking soda if the body is no longer able to restore the acid-base balance. In this case there is a risk of kidney failure , says Hübner. The German Cancer Research Institute also warns against interactions with other medications when taking baking soda. Side effects such as nausea, muscle weakness, cramps, high blood pressure or kidney stones are also not unlikely.
