First of all: Yes, there were indeed complications during booster vaccinations in a care facility in Oberhausen, but no deaths. In addition, the two letters do not represent a general vaccination warning about booster vaccinations, but rather just a note to other doctors that a recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission has not yet been made and booster vaccinations are currently individual decisions that require individual justification.

This letter unsettled numerous users and spread rapidly on social media. Incidents are said to have occurred in a retirement home in Oberhausen-Holten after the corona vaccination. The fact that a doctor's letter about this is being spread on social media platforms only fuels the uncertainty.

According to the subject, one letter was about COVID-19 and “ unclear deaths after the third vaccination ”. The letter is aimed at all practicing doctors in Mühlheim an der Ruhr.

Now a second letter appears. This is about “ COVID-19 (as of September 7th, 2021) and “briefly very important information about vaccinations!

These are letters from the “North Rhine Medical Association” and the “North Rhine Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians”

– Statement from September 9th, 2021 from the North Rhine Medical Association –

No death after booster vaccination

Düsseldorf, September 9, 2021. Contrary to initial media reports, there was no death as a result of a booster vaccination in an Oberhausen care facility on September 4, as the crisis team of the city of Oberhausen confirmed.

To classify the events in the Oberhausen nursing home, we would like to refer to a press release from the North Rhine Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians , which has reviewed the incidents in Oberhausen.

The letter that the district office chairmen of the Mönchengladbach Medical Association and the Mönchengladbach Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians sent to their colleagues in the context of what happened in the Oberhausen nursing home should not be understood as a general warning against a booster vaccination.

The letter was intended to remind the doctors from Mönchengladbach who are authorized to vaccinate that a recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission has not yet been made and that booster vaccinations are currently made on a case-by-case basis and require individual justification.

The reference to the Standing Vaccination Commission was made not least because their expertise is highly trusted by both the medical profession and the population.

Under no circumstances did doctors want to unsettle the population about a booster vaccination or issue a general vaccination warning. This is expressly a letter to our colleagues on site.

No death after booster vaccination in Oberhausen care facility

On Wednesday, September 1st, 89 residents in a retirement home in Oberhausen-Holten received a booster vaccination against COVID-19 with the mRNA vaccine Comirnaty from Biontech/Pfizer. Nine vaccinated people showed health reactions after the vaccination.

On Saturday, September 4th, two people who had previously received a booster vaccination had to be resuscitated. Contrary to initial media reports, there has been no death as a result of the vaccination, as the crisis team of the city of Oberhausen confirmed today. A resident who died in the care facility around the time of the booster vaccinations and who had previously received palliative care was not among those vaccinated.

Both people who were resuscitated had previous illnesses. The vaccinations were carried out by an experienced doctor who has been involved in vaccinations against the coronavirus since the start of the vaccination campaign. According to our information, a causal connection between the resuscitation and the booster vaccinations administered has not yet been proven. According to our information, some vaccinated people reported minor reactions in the days after the third vaccination, such as those that occur after the first and second vaccinations. The two resuscitated people in need of care are currently being treated as inpatients. Undesirable side effects from vaccinations are reported to the Paul Ehrlich Institute.

No other cases known

In the area of the North Rhine Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KV), 11,441 booster vaccinations had been carried out by September 7th. In no case have we become aware of vaccination reactions comparable to those in the Oberhausen care facility. To our knowledge, the NRW Ministry of Health (MAGS), the State Center for Health (LZG) and the Robert Koch Institute have not reported any further cases of serious side effects in North Rhine-Westphalia as a result of booster vaccinations.

Letter to Mühlheim residents

In a letter to the doctors in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Dr. med. Stephan von Lackum, representative of the board for the district office in Mülheim, about the events in Oberhausen. He asks his colleagues in Mühlheim to decide for themselves whether a booster vaccination is urgent for their own patients, as long as there is no recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO). “The letter was not coordinated with us and was created under the signatory’s own responsibility – certainly also as a reflex to the events in Oberhausen,” says Dr. med. Frank Bergmann, CEO of KV Nordrhein. Bergmann continues: “Basically, he is only repeating what the Conference of Health Ministers decided on September 6th with regard to booster vaccinations for people over 60: namely that the vaccinations should be carried out according to medical discretion and individual consideration - and only “If the COVID-19 vaccination series was completed at least six months ago.”

In this context, Bergmann points out that there is no reason to rush for a possible third vaccination. “Vaccination protection only wears off very slowly after complete immunization and does not end abruptly overnight.” Nevertheless, an early recommendation from STIKO on booster vaccinations is desirable in order to avoid uncertainty in practices, but also among patients. However, a general suspension of booster vaccinations is not necessary due to the incidents in Oberhausen.

Conclusion:

There were indeed complications during booster vaccinations in a care facility in Oberhausen, but no deaths.

In addition, the two letters do not represent a general vaccination warning about booster vaccinations, but rather just a note to other doctors that a recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission has not yet been made and booster vaccinations are currently individual decisions that require individual justification.
