Not a fake: outdoor pool gives away 800,000 liters of water
Instead of draining the chlorine water into the sewage system as usual, it is now given away to farmers and gardeners. A welcome idea in the driest region of Germany.

Farmers and hobby gardeners have not had it easy this season. The hot spell was simply too long and there hasn't been as little rain as this summer for a long time. The region around Wiesbaden was even considered the driest region in Germany. In view of this, the Bad Schwalbach outdoor swimming pool in southern Hesse has thought of something special: 800,000 liters are to be given away for irrigation. Normally the water is drained into the sewer system over five weeks. The delivery should now be quicker.
Since Monday, September 12th, 2022, all farmers, but also private individuals, have been able to pump water out of the swimming pool for watering in order to irrigate their dry fields or simply their trees and flowers. The water is also used to fill fire-fighting water tanks. Accordingly, the fire department also filled some of its vehicles on Monday.
According to the lifeguard, the chlorinated water is ideal for watering.
The bathing water has already been cleaned after the end of the bathing season. The lifeguard Richard van Rijn recently stopped pouring chlorine into the pool and added a lot of fresh water to dilute it.
“The chlorine evaporates through the environment, air, weather and sun,” says the lifeguard. “He had the idea a few years ago,” reveals van Rijn to “Spiegel”.
The noticeably dry summer prompted him to put the plan into action - and it was surprisingly productive. “It's incredibly busy,” says the lifeguard about the rush. Farmers drove up with large equipment to fill their water tanks.
One of the first on site was organic farmer Simon Dörr. “This summer in particular has shown us once again how carefully we should use water as a resource. I think this is a great campaign.” He wants to use the water to water the freshly planted fruit trees in his orchard, which he created just last year. These could use every liter and the community plants are finally being watered after the hot summer.
However, the 800,000 liters are only a quarter of the pool water.
The rest is left in the outdoor pool as winter protection. Thanks to the action of lifeguard Richard van Rijn, other outdoor pools in the Hesse area are now also checking whether they can supply their chlorine water.
