The US company Walmart apologizes for a sweater depicting Santa Claus with cocaine.

US retail giant Walmart has apologized for a sweater depicting a Santa Claus consuming cocaine with the words "Let It Snow" written on it.

After the reactions to the sweater on social media were rather mixed, the company has now removed the item of clothing from its range.

“Best snow from South America”

The sweater shows a cartoon Santa Claus with big eyes. The figure sits in front of a table on which three white lines reminiscent of cocaine can be seen. The fact that Santa Claus appears to be holding a small tube in his hand leaves little room for other interpretations.

There is also the accompanying text: “We all know how snow works. It's white, powdery and the best comes straight from South America. This is bad for jolly old St. Nick (Santa Claus), who lives far away in the North Pole.”

Some Twitter users were quite amused by the Christmas sweater. "So perfect. Definitely art,” wrote one user. “I kind of want one of these,” said another.

Sorry for “annoyance”

However, there was also criticism, which is why Walmart revised its range. The company apologized and clarified that the sweater was from a third-party vendor and was only offered on Walmart's Canadian website and not in the United States.

“These sweaters do not represent Walmart’s values and have no place on our website. We apologize for any unintentional annoyance this may cause,”

said a Walmart spokesperson.
