NSPCC warns companies to hide popular features in the fight against grooming

London (pte002/13.11.2018/06:05) – The British National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) http://nspcc.org.uk is demanding that Facebook no longer see “recommended friends” for minors receive. The reason for this is, among other things, a recent "Telegraph" report, according to which teenagers as young as 13 receive up to 300 suggestions for possible friends, including middle-aged men who can be seen half-naked in their profile photos.

Better algorithm needed

“Those who practice grooming seek to infiltrate children’s friendship groups on social networks, often with the intention of getting children to live-stream or encrypted websites where sexual abuse can easily be committed. Social media algorithms can make it easier to find and contact children and teenagers, and 'recommended friends' and 'friends of friends' can legitimize their requests. “We therefore call for these features to be blocked from children,” said Andy Burrows from the NSPCC.

According to Facebook, appropriate measures are in place to protect children. But campaigns have long warned that the social media giant needs to do more to stop criminals using the service to befriend children. “Grooming is incredibly serious. We have dedicated teams dedicated to child safety, informed by extensive research and outside experts,” said a Facebook spokesperson.

More protection for minors

“We use artificial intelligence to proactively identify cases of inappropriate interactions with minors and we flag possible abuses. “We’re also limiting how kids can be found in searches and reminding them to only accept friend requests from people they know,” Facebook said.

However, the NSPCC counters that social platforms are still failing to adequately protect children. “That is why the Home Secretary must commit to strong and effective regulation to finally ensure that the safety of children is non-negotiable,” Burrows concludes.
