Controversies over data protection, fake news, censorship and the lack of freedom of expression have repeatedly damaged the reputation of social tech companies such as Meta, Twitter and TikTok in recent years. This is shown by the “Axios Harris Poll 100” (HERE) . The annual survey by the international researcher Harris Poll measures the reputation of the most important brands in the USA.
Facebook in negative place 97
This year, Facebook ranks 97th in the US, Twitter ranks 98th, and TikTok ranks 94th among 100 brands. “The Trump Organization” was rated the worst. At the other end, i.e. in first place, is the food retailer Trader Joe's.
Companies producing smartphones and consoles were ranked much higher. Samsung comes in sixth place, Sony in tenth place. Companies like Microsoft and Apple, which sell hardware, services and content, rank 15th and 21st. Amazon maintains its position near the top of the list at number eight. As a retail platform, the company is not associated with the social media stigma.
Google is in 31st place, even though the video portal YouTube operated by the company is considered a social media platform. Some technology companies are also doing well. IBM, for example, takes eleventh place. Companies can win over the public with innovative and attractive products, but that doesn't necessarily correlate with consumer trust.
Tesla and Apple are crashing
Tesla and Apple, for example, rank first and fifth for products and services, but 55th and 54th for trust. This means that the two brands lead with the largest perception gaps between these two ratings.
Compared to established technology firms in sectors such as hardware and business services, those technology companies focused on streaming and social media are facing particularly steep declines. The results suggest that companies that are slow to respond to political crises or do so inconsistently suffer the most from consumer acceptance and trust.
