The claim
Apparently, or so one photo suggests, today's youth no longer makes room for the older ones! The picture is intended to represent the ignorance of the younger generation towards their elders!
Our conclusion
The fact is: The picture comes from Australia and the older lady didn't want to sit down because she wanted to get off at the next stop!
It shows an older woman holding onto a pole on a bus while younger passengers appear to stare impassively at their smartphones or look out the window without being offered a seat. reported on the viral image here on Mimikama back in 2019 , now it's time to revisit the story behind it.

A snapshot
The image, which quickly went viral and touched many people emotionally, is a clear symbol of the younger generation's ignorance of their elders - or so it seems. The older woman stands tensely in the shaking bus while the younger passengers sit comfortably in their seats. But like so many pictures on the internet, this one is just a snapshot that says nothing about the actual conditions. And it is precisely in such cases that the door is open to interpretation and speculation.
The grandson answers
The picture was taken in Australia and caused a stir there before it was spread worldwide and discussed just as intensively. There was great outrage at the supposed ignorance of the young generation.
But then someone who knew the situation first hand came forward: the old lady's grandson. He saw the picture and immediately sent a clarification to Ben Fordham's 2GB radio show. "The old lady was just getting off at the next stop - it's my grandmother ," he explained.
Ben Fordham conducted a telephone interview with Howard Collins, CEO of Sidney Trains. In this interview, Collins said: “The image is a chance to remind people that in our world of texts and headphones, we should also look up. Is there anyone who would need your space more urgently?”
Conclusion: As is often the case on the Internet, this viral image turns out to be a snapshot that can easily be misunderstood without context. The lady wasn't ignored, she was standing there because she wanted to get out. This story reminds us that it is always important to examine the context before jumping to conclusions. It is also a reminder to pay attention to our fellow human beings - especially in our fast-moving times.
The importance of fact checking
Misinformation and misunderstandings can spread quickly on the Internet. They are often sparked by emotional issues, such as in this case the perceived indifference of young people towards older people. Without fact checks like we do at Mimikama, such misinterpretations and stories could spread uncontrollably.
It's easy to share a viral post without verifying its veracity. Often the story behind the post is too poignant, too shocking or too moving not to be shared. Every time such a post is shared, the misinformation becomes entrenched until it is finally accepted as truth.
The dangers of misinformation
Misinformation can have various negative effects. They can fuel fears and prejudices, increase social tensions and undermine trust in important institutions or social groups. They can also distort our perception and understanding of important issues.
In this case, the viral image could give a false impression of how young people interact with older people. This could lead to unnecessary conflicts and misunderstandings between generations and further deepen the social divide.
Our work at Mimikama is to correct such misinformation before it spreads further. With our fact checks, we offer users a reliable source of information and help provide a more accurate and realistic picture of the world. In this way, we help make the Internet a more trustworthy and informative place.
Fact checks are essential at a time when information is circulating faster than ever. They protect us from making incorrect assumptions, reinforcing prejudices or even acting on the basis of incorrect information. Our goal at Mimikama is to raise awareness of the importance of correct information and conscious use of social media.
