“I am liked, therefore I am,” is the credo of many influencers. And of course it is vital that others also see these likes.

Influencers or “Instagram models” are relatively dependent on numbers: Not only the number of followers determines the market value (and therefore also how many sponsors are interested in them), but also the likes of the posts posted on Instagram.

The Facebook subsidiary repeatedly hears that the number of likes is a decisive criterion for success and popularity on the social media platform. This evaluation system undermines self-esteem, especially among young people.

Instagram responded to this criticism and is now testing a version with hidden like information in some countries

“We hope this test takes the pressure off how many likes a post gets so you can get back to focusing on sharing the things you love,”

said Mia Garlick from the parent company Facebook.

However, the number of likes is still displayed under your own posts. Users can also see the list of people who have liked someone else's post.

Now also worldwide

Apparently the tests went satisfactorily, because Instagram announced through the PR agency Segmenta that the like ads for selected users are now disappearing in this country too: you can still see your own likes, but everyone else only sees a name and the addition “and others Persons".

Here is a comparison of two postings, this is what it will look like on the right in the future:

Instagram will hide the number of likes in the future
Instagram will hide the number of likes in the future.

According to Instagram, the goal is to make users feel less valued.
They also want to test “whether this change helps people focus less on likes and more on telling their story.” You can still see the likes in the insights:

Likes still visible in Instagram Insights

But the change does not affect everyone. For companies, for example, the counting tool will not change!
