It has been around since 2012: the light bulb, which is supposed to glow almost “infinitely”.

But no company seems to be really interested in the light bulb, which is why the question is asked again and again as to why. A corporate conspiracy or something else?

The story behind the light bulb

On September 1, 2012, stage 4 of the EU ban on conventional light bulbs came into force, since then only energy-saving lamps or incandescent lamps with less than 60 lumens (around 10 watts) may be sold. Just in the same year, a man named Benito Muros came forward and presented a lamp he had developed that was supposed to last almost indefinitely .

The principle

There is no big technical secret behind the light bulb, instead the principle is very simple:
all the components of the light bulb have been disproportionated so that, for example, the resistors, the glass and the filament last much longer. In addition, the components of the bulb are not firmly welded together, but rather plugged together: If one of the components breaks, it can be replaced without having to buy a completely new bulb.

The marketing

In 2014, the light bulb was apparently ready for the market: it was christened “iwop” and sold on its own website (which can still be viewed under the link). Amazon also showed great interest in marketing the “eternal lamp”, where it was offered for 33.80 euros per piece.

Although almost 34 euros is a proud price, you should also consider that, according to Benito Muros, the light bulb saves 50 percent energy compared to LED lamps and 96.5 percent compared to conventional light bulbs. The lower power consumption also means that 70 percent less CO2 is emitted, making it environmentally friendly.

So the light bulb caused quite a stir, and it wasn't as if no one was interested in marketing it; among other things, the global energy company " Elecnor " wanted to invest in the promising product .

Critical voices

But in the same year the first criticisms emerged because Benito Muros' light bulb apparently promised more than it could deliver.
LED y Spa , commented on the product both then and again in 2019, which the company examined in a blog post

Richly illustrated and with many measurements, it describes how the light bulb is constructed and what values it achieves. The following values were measured:

  • The lamp consumes 6W, not 3.5W as stated.
  • It has a luminosity of 538 lumens, which corresponds to 89.6 Lm/Watt. 214 Lm/W is stated.
  • Those 214 Lm/W could not be achieved at all, since the maximum of the LEDs used in the bulb is 150 Lm/W.

In summary, the blog says that it is a good bulb, but overstatements are made about its performance. The question also remains where you can redeem your 25-year guarantee, since the original website no longer exists .

, the company “ OEP Electrics ” and the SOP movement distanced themselves from Benito Muros in an official press release Exact information was not given in the press release, only that Muros had behaved dishonestly towards “OEP Electrics” and further cooperation was not possible.

But the most interesting are the statements of former employee and co-developer José Luis Marcos , who worked as technical director for Muros. He said that the project started out exciting, but became more and more of a burden because Marcos basically worked for Muros for a year without a contract, without wages and without social security; with the little money he received, he could only do that Cover daily expenses.

This in itself is not a criticism of the product itself, but Marcos also says that he was only able to develop the light bulb up to a certain point, so that a prototype was enough. For further, marketable development, a team would have been needed, but he couldn't pay for it.

The light bulb sold is actually nothing more than a prototype with an estimated lifespan of 50,000 hours, which corresponds to the maximum value of an LED lamp.

Criticism also about security

So that the bulbs still need to be repaired at some point, cheaper materials were used, says Marcos. However, taking it apart also poses a safety risk: he himself suffered an electric shock during a demonstration in which he wanted to show how easy it was for anyone to take apart the bulb because there was still residual electricity in the bulb.

So he tried to convince Muros to design the bulb so that only technicians could take it apart, but Muros refused.

A process

Muros contradicts the statements of his former employee and is suing him for misappropriation of intellectual property, insult and unfair competition.
He claims Marcos was acting on behalf of multinational companies interested in the product. The trial is scheduled to take place in January 2020.

Conclusion

The light bulb can no longer be found on Amazon and the website no longer exists .
After initial enthusiasm about the “eternal” light bulb, sobriety soon spread among both traders and investors: the technical values of the light bulb were rather unsatisfactory for the price, and were also demonstrably wrong; the stated lifespan is logically based purely on projections.

Only because of the upcoming trial in January 2020, Muros is now making a name for himself again with an old presentation video, which is also being shared on WhatsApp, seasoned with death threats that he is said to have received due to the development of the lamp.

At this point, however, one can only conclude that either there is a huge corporate conspiracy against the lamp (even though energy companies themselves invested in it) or it was too good to be true.
