The claim

The Obersalzberg, where Adolf Hitler had one of his government seats, is now being converted into a nuclear waste repository. The information board with the construction project to “relocate the Obersalzberg” informs the population that part of the Obersalzberg has to be moved for storage.

Our conclusion

The information board comes from an artist collective who set it up for their project “ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN OBERSALZBERG”. In this art performance, everyone involved was able to help build a “fictitious” nuclear waste repository at the Nazi pilgrimage site. The search for the actual location for the final repository is not yet complete and therefore continues.

The right-wing extremist milieu in particular would be less enthusiastic about this idea, since Adolf Hitler had his second residence and government seat on the Obersalzberg, and this place now functions as a pilgrimage site for neo-Nazis. Converting a place like this into a final storage facility would generally be a very good idea, but the information board “just” turned out to be an art project.

Beautiful nature meets Nazi history

Located in beautiful Berchtesgaden, on the German-Austrian border, this place served as a holiday home for Adolf Hitler as early as the 1920s.

When Hitler came to power, this holiday home was expanded into the second seat of government alongside Berlin and became the so-called “Führer restricted area”. It became Hitler's home mountain, where decisions about genocide and war were made. This fact also repeatedly attracts neo-Nazis who visit the mountain as a place of pilgrimage.

The museum on the mountain explains things

The “Obersalzberg Documentation” museum is located on the mountain. With its permanent exhibition, this museum is an educational opportunity to “raise awareness and come to terms with the Nazi past”. ( Source )

It is currently being rebuilt and will only be reopened late - probably in spring 2023 - due to delivery bottlenecks in building materials. These renovations fit perfectly into the concept of an art project that was realized by an artist collective on October 8th and 9th, 2022.

The art project “ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN OBERSALZBERG”

As part of this project, an information board was set up on the site of the former so-called “Berghof”, Hintereck, 83471 Berchtesgaden. There is a report about the construction project, namely the “relocation of the Obersalzberg”. This site, according to the information board, was “selected as a suitable (nuclear waste) final repository”. A piece of the mountain simply needs to be moved to prepare for storage work to seal it. ( Source )

In this art performance, everyone involved, artists and spectators, was able to advance this project by wearing high-visibility vests and removing a symbolic mountain of earth with shovels and wheelbarrows. This art project was a wonderful opportunity to visit the place with positive intentions.

Outraged reactions on social media

Since the museum and the bunkers on Obersalzberg are currently closed due to the above-mentioned renovation work, the art project's information board was unreflected and not researched by many people as a real project of the federal government, commented on indignantly and spread.

And what about the real nuclear waste repository?

The search continues …

Conclusion

No, the Obersalzberg was not chosen as a nuclear waste repository.

The information board, which some users probably considered to be genuine, comes from an artist collective who set it up for their project “ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN OBERSALZBERG”. In this art performance, everyone involved was able to help build a “fictitious” nuclear waste repository at the Nazi pilgrimage site.
