Then a message flutters in on WhatsApp that Obi is giving away gas grills as giveaways. Sounds great! A free gas grill like this is perfect for the summer. Very nice of Obi. But be careful: Obi is not behind this competition!
This fact can already be seen from the link in the message. Even if “obi.de” is mentioned in the text, the actual URL that you are directed to is “tinyurl5.ru/…”, which means you can say with certainty that Obi is not the organizer of the alleged competition.
The process is always the same
If you click on the link in the message, a page opens that appears in the look of Obi:

As always, to take part in the competition you have to forward the good news to five WhatsApp groups or 20 WhatsApp contacts.
I wonder why? Very simple: so that the fake spreads quickly.
Also known: “changing the topic” during a competition
Again and again, an announced prize, like the Weber gas grills here, changes to another tempting price. Sometimes it's the latest iPhone, sometimes it's a voucher from a grocery store. With this fake, however, we are talking about a ridiculously high jackpot of almost 16 million dollars.

Here we are also redirected from one page to the next. During the page hopping, the winnings suddenly become a little smaller: “€1 million! for only €10,” it says. In order to “redeem the offer”, data such as name and email address are requested. If you click on the terms and conditions, you will also find out which personal data will be requested over time: date of birth, gender, telephone number, identification documents, bank statements, utility bills, ...

Again we are redirected to another page and welcomed to the “Yukon Gold Casino”. The first step is to deposit 10 euros here. At this point we stopped clicking any further.
Now what about the gas grill?
Nothing at all. This was just bait to lead people to where the scammers wanted them. In the end, you give a bunch of your personal data into someone else's hands, take out subscriptions, register for an online casino and probably receive a lot of spam in the future, which is simply beautifully phrased as "marketing communication".
Conclusion
Supposed competitions that arrive via WhatsApp always follow the same pattern: The message should be spread further in the first steps of the process so that the likelihood that the fraudsters behind the fake competition will get as much data as possible increases.
In the end, you don't get the promised profit, but instead you lose your personal data, receive endless spam, may have taken out an expensive subscription or even downloaded malware.
Therefore: Ignore and delete such messages, which come with a URL that smells noticeably fake anyway. And it's best to inform the sender that this is a fake competition that has nothing to do with the alleged sender.
