The Facebook subsidiary Oculus will soon give users of its VR glasses Oculus Quest access to the messaging app Messenger. Users can chat with others via virtual reality (VR) by either manually typing the text or having their voice converted into written form by speech recognition software.
Future technology: “With VR, Facebook is relying on a very promising technology for social networks. A large part of digital communication will soon take place in virtual worlds. The Corona crisis is accelerating this development. The Oculus Quest 2 VR glasses in particular have great potential. It is not wired, technologically very advanced and relatively inexpensive,” explains future technology expert Xerxes Voshmgir http://xerxes.re to pressetext.
Oculus Quest users and regular messenger users can chat freely with each other. If there are several VR users in a chat, they can start an Oculus party within the group and play video games together. To use Messenger, users must log in to their Facebook account. A login was previously required to use the Oculus Quest 2, but not for the Oculus Quest 1.
Concerns about privacy
According to Facebook, Messenger will have no impact on the Oculus Quest's privacy settings. The social media giant is currently looking to increasingly connect its applications, which is causing many users to worry about their privacy. The Facebook subsidiary WhatsApp will pass on data to the parent company in the future. The app also relies more on communication between companies and private individuals, which can, however, lead to violations of the GDPR in the EU.
