Maybe you've read the words "Ok Boomer" in heated discussions on social media over the last few days and wondered what that means again.
Ok Boomer has been popping up more often recently as a short comment response. The answer is usually written by people from the so-called Generation Y (aka Millenials) and Z. It is always written when older people from the baby boomer generation act lecturing and arrogant towards them.

Boomer is the abbreviation of the term baby boomer. Broken down, Ok Boomer is a typical generational conflict, packaged into two words. Somehow the “yes” in the generational conflict. But just a little more.
Ok Boomer: Mockery
In a way, the comment is also an expression of mockery towards the baby boomer generation when a person from this generation makes nonsensical statements in posts or discussions. Basically a statement on a topic that this person has neither idea about nor is really affected by.
The starting point is the prejudices that baby boomers have towards the younger generations in postings or in public. They are spoiled, lazy, won't get anything done but will criticize everything. And there is exactly one short answer to these prejudices: Ok Boomer!

Origin and distribution
The New York Times specifically sees a clip on TikTok as the great hour of the term Ok Boomer . It's about a video clip in which an older man (from the baby boomer generation) says that younger people suffer from a kind of Peter Pan syndrome: they never want to grow up.
In a viral audio clip on TikTok, a white-haired man in a baseball cap and polo shirt declares, “The millennials and Generation Z have the Peter Pan syndrome, they don't ever want to grow up.”
This exact rant was answered in the comments with “Ok Boomer”. True to the motto “Tell me, you have no idea”. This resulted in many memes, and even a webshop where the reaction can be read.
Just a side note: In terms of content, the story goes a little deeper. Especially in the USA, millennials have been and are blamed for all sorts of negative developments. The search term “ Millennials killed […]” brings up numerous search results that supposedly want to prove that Millennials are responsible for the adventurous problems of today.
In this respect, the “Ok Boomer” reaction is even more understandable.
The baby boomer generation does not have to be affected
But you don't necessarily have to belong to that generation to get a mocking reaction with "Ok Boomer". It is enough if you represent typical values of the generation or behave very conservatively. Especially if you don't understand certain online content and techniques.
