Around March 1990, Liz and Ian Finlay welcomed a cat into their home. “Nutmeg” – “nutmeg” in German – should bring you a lot of joy for a long time. At that time, during a visit to the vet, they found out that Nutmeg was already around five years old. The cat, which is actually a tomcat, was born around 1985.

Cats have a life expectancy of around 15 years. However, you often hear about cats that get much older. When you search Google for the “oldest cat in the world” you can find a variety of information: 32 years, 38 years, over 20 years,…
If you consider that a cat year is equivalent to around 15 human years, then these numbers are even more impressive.

Nutmeg's long life

Aside from treating an abscess on his neck when the Finlays take Nutmeg into their home, he is allowed to live a healthy life here. However, he suffered a stroke in 2015, after which he was treated at Westway Veterinary Center in Newcastle. He fully recovered from the seizure. We do the math: Nutmeg was already 30 years old in 2015.

In 2016, the Westway Veterinary Center on her 31st birthday on Facebook, where the treatment a year earlier was also reported.

Since that posting, time seems to have stood still for Nutmeg.

In 2016 Nutmeg turned 31 years old. But also 2017, 2018, ... and also 2022?

On Facebook, for example, a page called “Beautiful Animals” congratulates you on your 31st birthday on September 25, 2022.

On another page called “Good Info” , this was already done on September 10, 2022.

The articles shared here report that this cat recently celebrated his 31st birthday.
One of the articles is from September 25, 2022. The title is that the oldest cat in the world turns 31. The first paragraph below states that Nutmeg was found by the Finlays in 1990 and that he was at least five years old at the time. Nobody here has probably done the math. Accordingly, Nutmeg should have been born around 1985 (which is quite correct), the year is 2022. And now he is 31 years old? - Find the mistake.

Nutmeg was 32 years old

As the Westway Veterinary Group reported on Facebook on September 14, 2017, Nutmeg died in 2017 as a result of heart failure.

He was an incredible 32 years old. With the average life expectancy for cats being 15 years, Nutmeg has more than doubled that.

Nutmeg turned 31 in 2016. Since then, this birthday photo has been shared with Westway Veterinary Group. Although he unfortunately passed away in 2017.

It's probably just a quick "Wow" for the user, plus "Catcontent", and the share button is clicked. Without reading a little bit or checking whether that is actually the case. Of course, this story won't hurt anyone or cause any harm if you share it with your friends or followers.

But what happens when you go to your fridge and there's yogurt sitting somewhere in the back? – Do you just offer this to your visitor, or do you kindly check the expiry date first?
