The smartphone is part of life for many people in Germany. However, opinions differ when it comes to using the device on Christmas Eve.

59 percent of Germans who celebrate Christmas put their smartphones aside at least at certain times, for example while eating. A fifth (19 percent) even have a general ban on smartphones on Christmas Eve, although only 13 percent adhere to this - and 6 percent do not all adhere to it.

These are the results of a representative survey of 1,005 people in Germany aged 16 and over on behalf of the digital association Bitkom. According to this, 56 percent feel bothered by looking at their smartphone too much on Christmas Eve. And 45 percent are even actively committed to using their smartphones less or not at all on Christmas Eve.

Half of those surveyed don't want to do without at all

However, there is a large proportion who do not want to go without their own smartphone on Christmas Eve. 52 percent of people who celebrate Christmas use their smartphone to take pictures and videos. For 51 percent, smartphones are important for keeping in touch with family and friends. And 48 percent say: I don't want to limit my smartphone use on Christmas Eve.

“Every family has its own traditions and preferences. Clear agreements help to ensure that the smartphone does not become a bone of contention on Christmas Eve,” says Dr. Sebastian Klöß, consumer technology expert at Bitkom. For 8 percent, the smartphone is firmly integrated into the Christmas Eve routine: they need the device, for example to play music or read the Christmas story.
